             6-8        Easter Egg Trail, 1:00pm - 5:00pm daily (last admission 4:30pm).

A family afternoon of fun and games, supported by Cadbury.  Everyone who completes the trail will receive an Easter egg.

Normal admission applies, plus £1.50 per participating child.  Well-behaved dogs admitted - must be kept on leads.

            21       Grange Barn Dance Festival, 10:00am - 5:00pm.

Help us to bring the Barn alive and raise awareness and funds for the Mary Rose Museum and the National Trust in our spectacular Living History and Dance Festival.

Meet King Henry VIII and Queen Katherine of Aragon.  Try Tudor archery and learn about the English long bow.  Traditional Tudor story teller.  Embroidery skills workshops.  Historical musicians playing Tudor tunes.  Learn some traditional Tudor dances and some royal etiquette.  Elizabethan dancing, Scottish country dancing, Irish set dancing, 1940s jive dancing and American trial belly dancing workshops and demos throughout the day.  Learn about King Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose.

Don't miss the King and Queen's arrival at the Barn at 10:30am with fanfare and the royal entourage.  The King and Queen will leave the premises with fanfare at 4:50pm.

Admission £3.00 adult, £1.50 child.  50% of will be donated to the Mary Rose Trust.  Well-behaved dogs admitted - must be kept on leads.

             1           Quantum Theatre presents William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream', 7:00pm - 10:00pm (approx).

Set on that most dangerous of nights, when fairies are abroad and nothing is as it seems.  Four young, unsuspecting lovers become entangled in their magical affray and soon no mortals are safe in those bewitched and bewitching woods outside Athens.  This production has enjoyed a fantastic response from audiences all over the country and, presented in inimitable Quantum style, is fast paced, highly energetic and of course rip-roaringly funny!

             12-14    Coggeshall Amateur Theatrical Society’s Summer Play.

Coggeshall’s finest thespians CATS return to the Barn for their annual summer performance.  Guaranteed to be a hilarious evening – check local press and Grange Barn NT website for details.

              21        DOT Productions present Oliver Goldsmith's 'She Stoops To Conquer', 7:30pm - 10:30pm (approx).

Professional touring theatre company DOT Productions presents this Restoration comedy, bringing laughter to the Barn in a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.  An ambitious stepmother, a pragmatic father and a pair of star-crossed suitors are sent spinning through this ingenious comedy, thanks to a practical joke and mistaken identities.

The August Lectures, 7:30pm - 10:30pm.

A series of lectures brought to you this year by the Discovering Coggeshall Project.  This is a community project being undertaken by the Coggeshall Heritage Society and the Essex Historic Buildings Group to establish accurate dates for the timber-framed buildings in the centre of the town and to trace how Coggeshall developed over the centuries.  Admission £4 per person.  Multi-buy discount: buy tickets to all 5 lectures for £16.

  3 - 'Six Coggeshall Writers' - Speaker: Michael Horne

This talk will deal with the celebrated Ralph of Coggeshall, who wrote in the 1220s; Sir John Smythe, who wrote about munitions; Thomas Stoughton, the Vicar of Coggeshall from 1600 to 1601; Robert Aylett, the poet and lawyer, who lived at Feeringbury in the 1620s to 1630s; James Castle, the 19th century weaver who founded the Colchester Co-op and W.F. Pfander Swinborne, the isinglass manufacturer 100 years ago, who wrote an epic romance on Gustavus Adolphus and several sets of sonnets, one of which is about Income Tax.

10 - 'Mapping the 1575 Coggeshall Rental Survey' - Speaker: Mike Meadows

In 1575 a Rental Survey of Coggeshall was commissioned.  This document survives at the National Records Office and is almost unique for the period as many of the property dimensions and street locations are recorded.  From the comprehensive information contained within the Rental Survey a map of Coggeshall has been drawn. This talk describes the process undertaken to produce the map.

17 - 'Variation on a Theme: the Development of Medieval Houses' - Speaker: Brenda Watkin

This talk will look at the application and development of the medieval house plan that was used for nearly 300 years.  Have the results of the Discovering Coggeshall Project shown variations and what was the impact of dendrochronology?

24 - 'Shops and Shopping: 1500 to 1600' - Speaker: Dave Stenning

Shops and shopping in the 16th century is a little known subject.  This talk will identify building types and terminology such as market stalls, booth stalls, domestic and speculative developments.  The scope will cover the wider national and mainland continent in addition to relating specifically to Coggeshall.

31 - 'Development of Medieval Towns' - Speaker: David Andrews

Coggeshall is one of about 25 medieval market towns in Essex, all different yet sharing many of the same features. This talk will put Coggeshall in this wider context, and also explain the picture that is emerging of its topographical development, showing how this reflects trends elsewhere.

             18          'Dance for Your Countryside' Barn Dance, 6:30pm - 10:30pm.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England invites you to dance at this fundraising event with music by the Scampering Rogues, special guest Oliver Wilson and caller Mike Collins.  Ticket price includes an Essex Hog Roast Supper and Cider, with locally produced drinks available at the bar.

              25-27   Paycocke's Big Dig, 11:00am - 4:30pm.

Help us uncover Paycocke’s past by joining in with our archaeological dig in the garden, Time Team style. We will be digging trenches to find the old brewery and whether there is any evidence for a Tudor Chapel on site.  Come along, help us to fill in a few more gaps and have a go!  Normal admission applies.

Paycocke's is in West Street, Coggeshall.  Street parking there is extremely limited so please use public car parks in the town.

              28        Quantum Theatre presents: 'The Tales of Beatrix Potter – Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny', 6:00pm - 9:00pm (approx).

Lose yourself in the magical world of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny as they venture into Mr. McGregor’s garden, only to need rescuing by Benjamin’s father.  With live music and all your favourite characters, Quantum Theatre’s delightful new production promises a magical and enchanting experience for young and old alike.

              13-16   4th Annual Coggeshall Beer Festival, 12:00 noon - 11:00pm (8.00pm Sunday).

A celebration of Essex's fine real ales, Kent ciders, East Anglian wines and produce.

              6-7       The Guild of Essex Craftsmen's Autumn Craft Fair, 10:00am - 5:00pm.

The guild brings its fair to the Barn for a two-day showcase of working craft displays and demonstrations - an ideal opportunity for some early Christmas shopping.

Admission £3 adult, accompanied under 16s free.
